A burnt submersible motor costs you a rewinding bill, a day of pulling the pump out of the borewell, and days without water for your crops. Almost every burnt motor has the same story: a fault that nobody caught in time. The borewell ran dry, one phase went missing, the voltage swung, or the motor kept running on overload. This guide lists every fault that burns a submersible motor, the protection that stops each one, and which BTCO starter has it, so your motor is switched off before it burns.

What is submersible motor protection?
Submersible motor protection means switching the motor off the moment something goes wrong, before the winding overheats and burns. The motor sits deep in the borewell where you can’t see or hear it, so the protection has to come from the starter on the surface. A good starter watches the supply and the current all the time, trips the motor on a fault, tells you why it stopped, and starts it again once it is safe.
The faults that burn a submersible motor, and what stops each one
| Fault | What you notice | What a BTCO starter does |
|---|---|---|
| Dry run | Water comes out weak or stops, but the motor keeps running | Stops the motor: Dry Run Trip. Restarts after the dry restart time |
| Single phasing | Motor hums, runs slowly or does not start | Stops the motor: Mains Problem |
| Overload | Amps higher than normal on the display, low water | Stops the motor: Overload Trip |
| Supply faults | Motor stops or hums; a fuse is blown or a wire is down | Stops the motor: Mains Problem |
| Voltage fluctuation | Lights dim or flicker, volts on the display go up and down | Stops the motor when the current goes out of the safe range |
| Earth fault and imbalance | Uneven current between phases, leakage | Stops the motor: Ground/Imbalance |
| Cable or kit fault | Motor trips soon after starting | Stops the motor: Check Cable/Kit |
| Rotor lock (jammed pump) | Motor does not turn, high current | Combined starters and the MPAU stop the motor |

Dry run protection
When the water level in the borewell drops below the pump, the motor keeps running with nothing to cool it. This is one of the most common reasons motors burn, especially at night and in summer. A BTCO starter notices the drop in current when the pump runs dry and switches the motor off. After the dry restart time you set, it starts the motor again by itself, so the borewell gets time to refill and you don’t lose a full night of watering. Single phasing protection (SPP)
A 3 phase motor needs all three phases. If one goes missing, the motor keeps trying to run on two, draws far more current and can burn quickly. Every BTCO 3 phase starter, the Combined starters and the MPAU switch the motor off as soon as a phase is missing and show Mains Problem. You don’t need a separate single phasing preventer. Read more about single phasing protection for submersible motors.
Overload protection
A motor is overloaded when it draws more current than it is made for: a pump jammed with sand, worn bearings, or a voltage swing on the line. The heat builds up slowly, so you don’t notice until the winding fails. A BTCO starter compares the running current with the overload trip amps and stops the motor when it goes over, showing Overload Trip. The 3 phase and Combined starters learn the motor’s healthy amps the first time they are connected. See how to protect your submersible motor from overload.
Supply fault protection
Farm power lines are long, and faults on them are common: a wire is cut or damaged, a fuse blows, or a phase drops out on the HT or LT line. BTCO 3 phase starters, the Combined starters and the MPAU detect these supply faults and stop the motor, with Mains Problem on the display.
The display also shows the volts on each phase, so you can see a weak or faulty supply for yourself.
Voltage fluctuation protection
When the voltage on the line goes too high or too low, the motor draws more current than it should and starts to overheat. BTCO starters trip the motor based on the current it actually draws, so whatever the voltage does, the starter stops the motor the moment the current goes out of the safe range, before the winding burns. This is why a BTCO starter protects your motor from voltage fluctuation as well. Read more about voltage fluctuation protection.
The Single Phase starter also has dedicated low voltage and high voltage protection, so your single phase motor is switched off when the supply goes too low or too high.
Earth fault and current imbalance protection
If current leaks to earth, or one phase carries much more current than the others, one part of the winding overheats while the rest looks fine. BTCO starters watch for both and stop the motor with Ground/Imbalance on the display. Earth leakage is also a safety risk for anyone touching the panel or the pipe, so get your earthing checked by an electrician too.
Cable and kit fault protection
The cable to a submersible motor runs deep under water, and its joints are a weak point. A damaged joint or a leaking winding lets current leak and slowly damages the motor. BTCO starters watch for leakage in the cable and the winding and stop the motor with Check Cable/Kit, so you can fix the joint before it costs you the motor.
Rotor lock and capacitor protection
On juice line (series line) and 2 phase supply, a 3 phase motor runs with the help of capacitors. If the rotor gets stuck, or a capacitor goes weak, the motor stalls and heats up within seconds. The Combined DOL and Combined star delta starters stop a stalled motor (rotor lock) and use auto-adjusting capacitors. The Single Phase starter protects against a shorted capacitor.

Separate protection devices or one starter that does it all?
Many pump panels are built up over the years: a manual starter, then an auto switch, then a single phasing preventer, then a dry run relay. Each box covers one fault, each adds wiring and joints that can fail, and none of them tells you what went wrong. A BTCO starter does all of these jobs in one unit, with one display that shows the volts, the amps and the reason for every trip.
Already have a starter? Add protection with the MPAU
You don’t need to replace a working starter. The BTCO MPAU (motor protection with auto start unit) fits 3 phase DOL and star delta starters for motors up to 30 HP. It adds dry run, single phasing, overload, voltage fluctuation, supply fault, earth fault, imbalance and cable fault protection, a digital display and automatic start when power returns. It is the same unit that runs every BTCO 3 phase starter.
Know the moment your motor trips
Protection works best when you know about it. The display on every BTCO starter shows why it stopped, such as Dry Run Trip, Overload Trip, Mains Problem, Ground/Imbalance or Check Cable/Kit. Fit the BTCO GSM Module and you get the trip alert on your phone, along with power cut and power restored alerts, in the free BTCO Starters app or by SMS. Read more about the BTCO mobile starter.

Every trip message has a short video in English, Kannada and Telugu on our videos page.
What else your pump line needs
- Good earthing: the earth fault protection works best with a proper earth connection at the panel.
- The right cable and good joints: a cable that is too thin for the distance drops the voltage at the motor, and a poor joint under water is where many cable faults start.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best protection for a submersible motor?
A starter that protects against all the common faults together: dry run, single phasing, overload, voltage fluctuation, supply faults, earth faults and cable faults. Separate devices each cover one fault. A BTCO fully automatic starter covers all of these in one box, shows why it tripped and starts the motor again when it is safe.
What can damage a submersible pump motor?
Most submersible motors burn because of dry running, a missing phase (single phasing), overload from a jammed pump or worn bearings, a cut wire or blown fuse in the supply, earth faults and damaged cable joints. Voltage swings also make the motor draw too much current and heat up; a BTCO starter trips on the current, so it stops the motor in time.
Do submersible pumps have dry run protection built in?
Most submersible motors used on farms do not protect themselves against dry running. The protection has to come from the starter. Every BTCO starter has dry run protection, and after a dry run trip it starts the motor again by itself once the borewell has had time to refill.
How do I protect a 3 phase motor from single phasing?
Use a starter that switches the motor off the moment a phase goes missing. Every BTCO 3 phase starter, including the Combined starters and the MPAU, does this and shows Mains Problem on the display. You don’t need a separate single phasing preventer.
Does a BTCO starter protect against voltage fluctuation?
Yes. BTCO starters trip the motor based on the current it draws. When the voltage goes too high or too low, the motor current goes out of the safe range and the starter stops the motor before it overheats. The Single Phase starter also has dedicated low voltage and high voltage protection.
Can I add motor protection to the starter I already have?
Yes. The BTCO MPAU fits existing 3 phase DOL and star delta starters for motors up to 30 HP. It adds dry run, single phasing, overload, voltage fluctuation, earth fault and cable fault protection, a digital display and automatic start when power returns.
